PARENTING IN THE WORKPLACE: Encouraging and helping businesses to set up sustainable, low-cost programs in which parents care for their children at work while doing their jobs. There is growing evidence that millions of today’s jobs can be done successfully while parents are simultaneously caring for children. At least 100 organizations in more than 35 states in the United States (and several in other countries) have established programs allowing employees to bring their pre-crawling babies to work every day, involving more than 1300 babies to date. Baby-friendly businesses (which range from 3 to 3000 employees in more than 20 different industries) have discovered that, within a well-structured program, allowing babies in the workplace costs an organization almost nothing and provides extensive business benefits, including employees voluntarily returning to work earlier after a baby’s birth, higher workplace morale and long-term productivity, increased retention, better recruitment, and higher customer loyalty. These businesses have demonstrated that babies thrive and are highly content in structured workplace programs and invariably end up creating a community parenting dynamic in which many coworkers bond with the babies and voluntarily assist in their care for brief periods. These programs have proven successful even though many people were highly skeptical of their viability prior to implementation (these same people often became staunch supporters of structured …

Transcript by (www.newsy.com) BY JENNIFER MECKLES You’re watching multisource US news analysis from Newsy When it comes to parenting — nobody really knows all the answers, but everyone wants to believe they’ve got it right. One “Chinese Mother” has written a book about her version of child-rearing, and it has stirred strong reaction from Western moms. She lists her “no’s” on NBC “Here a few things my daughters Sophia and Louisa were never allowed to do: Attend a sleep over, have a play date, watch TV or play computer games…” Amy Chua’s book “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” describes her Chinese Mother parenting style, emphasizing strict discipline and little to no praise. Her language also raised eyebrows — calling her daughter “lazy and garbage” as she struggled with piano tunes and threatening to burn toys for failure. On the Today Show, Chau explains her reasoning to a shocked Meredith Vieira: Meredith: “They were pretty harsh… words. That’s hard for a child, in my estimation, very difficult for a child to absorb and not feel bad about themselves.” Chua: “Its really driven by a belief that your children are capable of more than they think they are… I actually don’t think the Chinese parenting model is about achievement. I think it’s about helping your children to be the best that they can be, which is usually better than they think.” You think her methods are crazy? Well, she says many Chinese mothers are appalled by American tactics. Chua says Western mothers …

I’m 20 years old and I’m 15 weeks pregnant. I’m not sure how to break the news to my parents, I was pregnant 1 year ago but miscarried, my mom found out & was very upset with me. But at the time she liked my boyfriend, now times have changed, it’s still the same man but she hates him. I just need a way to break the news to her and my father. Both my parents have high expectations from me and this is going to be hard to do, please give me some ideas, I need to do this soon!
